Field Trip Tuesday!
Today we took a family field trip to Coconut Island in Kane’ohe Bay, it is home of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. You can only get there by boat! The four of us has a 2 hour private tour with Whiting, a retired navy shipyard worker. We got to learn the history of the island, learn about some of the current work being done, see lots of cool sea life and meet some researchers.

Black Tip Reef Sharks

Checking out different shark jaws.

Hammerhead Sharks

A view of the mountains from the island

This was built by the first private owner of the island in the early 1930s as his private pool! He used huge movie lights to light it up at night!

Pickleweed! Yes it’s edible and tastes like a pickle.

Way bigger hammerhead sharks!

These crazy red sea cucumbers, called conspicuous cucumbers, that only live in Kane’ohe Bay and Pearl Harbor.

We met a researcher when he came to change the go pro battery. He was taking time lapse video of a cowrie eating a sponge. Really nice guy who answered all our questions!

After our morning on coconut island we all headed to Tripler for a goodbye lunch for Ted. It was really nice to meet the other radiologists. They gave him a really nice surfboard plaque that will make a wonderful addition to his office. Ted has really enjoyed his work life at Tripler and everyone he got to work with.
This week Ted will continue his out processing as I try to sell stuff, mail stuff and pack stuff lol! More importantly we have a list of things we want to do before we leave and a list of places we want to eat...lol! We are all going to miss the ono grindz! Last night we hit up ramen in Kailua and tonight was Korean bbq! Let the eating continue!!
