Road to Hana

We made it back to Maui today for the long weekend. Our first stop, Hana, via the famed Road to Hana.  And if you are going to drive to Hana you gotta rent a Jeep!!   Instead of trying to cram it all in in one day we got an amazing place to stay for the night right in Hana.  As I type I’m wishing we were staying here for more than one night!  

The road to Hana was certainly windy (rumor is there are 620 turns), included 59 one lane bridges (we lost count after 4) and was beautiful!!  So, so glad we came back to do it!  From the airport we went straight to Flatbread Pizza, the very same one we have been to in Portland, Portsmouth, North Conway, etc. and picked up pizza to go!  The hostess was from Portsmouth!





We were all starving so we drove to the closest beach to eat and get situated to hit the road (sunscreen on, top off the Jeep....the essentials!).   Turns out there were turtles like crazy swimming there. The biggest ones I’ve ever seen here! 


Look carefully and you can see 3!  We saw up to 6 at once but with the surf it was hard to get good pictures! 





We pulled ourselves away from the turtles and we were off!   Ted was a great navigator of all the curves and not to worry Aunt Kath no one got sick lol!

We used a great app by Gypsy for Road to Hana.  It told stories and pointed out must stops and if you have time stops.  The first must stop was the Keanae Arboretum.

Our next trek off the main road was down to a tiny town called Ke’anae.  Really cool lava formations along the water.  The town was totally destroyed in 1946 by a tsunami. 








Thankfully he was leashed lol!

Unfortunately it was closed so we couldn’t try the banana bread. 




Upper Waikato Falls aka Three Bears Falls

A stop that the app said wasn’t a must see but Maui Reavealed said was amazing was Nahiku, so we took a left and headed down a long narrow road to the beach. So worth it! 


We parked next to the church where the road ended and walked about 10 min down to the ocean.  


Along the way we found this beautiful swimming hole and waterfall.

It was starting to get late so we decided to make tracks to where we were staying for the night.  Oh my goodness it is spectacular!!  If anyone is coming to Hana I’ll send you the link!  Stay here!!

The plan is to get up before sunrise as it is rumored to be fantastic to see on black sand beach which is a 5 min walk from our house.  Wish us luck on getting up!

Almost forgot...highlight of the day...drive thru check in!  Our fastest check in EVER!!



Off to eat some leftover flatbread, hit the tub and then my screened in bed!   Aloha!

Hōkūleʻa

Tonight we went to The Bishop Museum to hear a talk given by the  Hōkūleʻa crew.  The Hōkūleʻa is a Polynesian voyaging canoe that was launched in 1975.  The crew uses Polynesian navigation techniques, also known as wayfinding.  The Hōkūleʻa spent the last 3 years circumventing the world and is now on a mahalo Hawaii tour.   The talk was fantastic!   We heard from a number of crew members including the captain, a medical officer, a cook, a couple teachers, a fisherman and the tech guy.  One of the missions of the trip was education, so the canoe would host talks with schools in Hawaii throughout the trip.   After the talk they served a meal that was cooked during the talk on the same stove that is aboard the  Hōkūleʻa and was typical of what they ate at sea.   It was delicious, ahi and pasta.   We also got to walk around and speak with the crew.  We purchased a beautiful book about the voyage which the boys had autogr...

Fabulous Friday!

Ted survived his first call!  We hit eggs ‘n things for a ridiculous breakfast before we hit the North Shore! I’ve turned into a person that takes pictures of her food...what?!  I should have taken the picture of nothing left on this plate while the rest of my family kept eating! Next stop Sunset Beach to check out the HIC Pro, the last qualifier for the Triple Crown of Surfing (starts mid November here on Oahu).  Turns out the waves were too crazy so the competition was off for the day.  It was still awesome to see the waves! Little surfer dudes! Next stop the Banzai Pipeline!  The whole beach was caution taped off and there was no one in the water! Next stop Shark Cove!  The craziest thing is that in the summer this is a protected, calm, snorkeling spot.   Last North Shore stop was Matsumoto’s for shave ice! Volcanos National Park

On Tuesday we flew into Hilo on the Big Island, also called Hawaii.  We drove into Hilo for some lunch and to quickly check out the town.  So different from other towns we have seen in the islands.  It reminded me of Puerto Rico.  After a couple quick errands (I managed to forget the camera charger) we started our way up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  First stop, the visitor center.   We got there just in time to hear a ranger orientation about the park and the various volcanoes on the Big Island.  Next stop Kīlauea Military Camp (KMC).  No longer used for active military it is a great place to stay inside the National Park.  It is just a mile from the Kīlauea Caldera and you can see the red smoke out the front door of our cabin.  It has a cafeteria style dining hall and a bowling alley lol!
